Beer Review: Maplewood – Bended Sea

A normal Porter comes off a bit stale and watery to me, but this one is packed with flavor.

The week before the big Morbidly Obese Pug release, I was busy enjoying myself Bended Sea, a Baltic Porter that had a surprising 9.5% ABV. I didn’t really know what a Baltic Porter was, but apparently it’s just a strong version of a Porter, similar to how a strong Stout is called a Russian Imperial Stout.

Bended Sea was absolutely fantastic. It lands somewhere between a Porter and an Imperial Stout. It packs a smoke flavor which I love. It also has a slight bitterness with a malty flavor and dark fruits before finishing dry. Even though it carries the 9.5% ABV, it certainly does not seem like it. And while it’s also heavy in the gut, it’s especially enjoyable for this time of year.

This is honestly one of the best Porters I’ve ever had. I haven’t tried a ton of Porters, but if they were more like this one I definitely would get them more often. A normal Porter comes off a bit stale and watery to me, but this one is packed with flavor. This beer is still available at Binny’s for $11.99 and I highly recommend trying it out.

Happy Drinking!
