Chicago Bulls’ guard Alex Caruso recently appeared on “The Old Man & The Three” podcast, which is hosted by former NBA guard and Duke standout JJ Redick. In the interview, Caruso expressed that he wanted to stay in Los Angeles with the Lakers. He even gave the Lakers a chance to match the offer the Bulls made him, but they declined.

Caruso wanted to stay so badly that even after the Lakers declined to match the Bulls’ offer, the guard said he would take a pay cut. The Lakers’ response was still “no”. Los Angeles was ready to move on from Caruso to add talent in other areas. Whether that sentiment holds merit or not, the Lakers’ decision allowed the Bulls to land a gem.

Caruso is an excellent defender. His ability to guard 1-3 is truly astonishing. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 186 pounds, Caruso plays with sneaky strength that makes him as valuable as they come for a bench player. His court vision, hustle, and ability to hit the three at a decent clip make him a bench weapon that opposing teams need to plan for.

Ten games into the 2021 season, Caruso is averaging 7.8 PPG, 2.6 RPG, and 3.9 APG. The 27-year-old also ranks in the top three in steals per game. In his short time here in Chicago, he’s become a fan favorite and seems to be well respected by his teammates and the coaching staff alike. You know what they say, one man’s trash could be another man’s treasure.

The clip above features Caruso discussing how he ended up in Chicago. The one below is a highlight reel from the Chicago Bulls.

Thanks, Lakers.
