Beer Review: Lagunitas – Unrefined Shugga’

Unrefined Shugga’ is as delicious as it is dangerous.

I was browsing my local Binny’s, as I usually do on Tuesday nights with Wednesday being my off day. I thought I had my three different beers picked out until I noticed the holiday beer display. Of course, I had to take a look.

To my surprise, I saw Lagunitas was a familiar “Shugga” staring me in the face. Upon further inspection, this isn’t the old Brown Shugga’ I remember, but now an Unrefined Shugga.

Unfortunately, Lagunitas didn’t brew Brown Shugga’ last year. It’s one of my favorite brews I look forward to grabbing this time every year. But even with a slightly different name, I see it’s brewed with whole cane sugar so I imagined this beer was going to be bomb.

Unrefined Shugga’ pours with a solid two inches of head. I poured a second one, let it sit for a couple of minutes, and the lacing was phenomenal — sticky like glue all up inside the glass. It’s also a beautiful color, as you can see pictured above.

It’s not too often I get super excited about a beer, but this is one of those beers. Unrefined Shugga’ is amazing. It has everything I’m looking for in a brew. It’s slightly bitter, then caramelly, followed by that cane sugar sweet finish.

This beer is as delicious as it is dangerous. It has an ABV of 10%, so I do not recommend copying me and having three in one night.. even though it is incredibly smooth. Remember, I am a professional.

Happy Drinking!
