On Tap Bets: CFB Friday Night Lights

Get your Friday night off on the right track with some college football picks courtesy of On Tap Sports Net.

Are you ready for some Friday night lights college football action? Tell me a better way to start the weekend than some college football. Oh, you can’t? As actor Jim Carrey once said, “alriiiiighty then.”

The only thing better than football being on your television on a Friday night is gambling on the football playing on your television on a Friday night. With that said, let’s jump right into the bets I’m playing and why.

No. 2 Cincinnati (-23.5) @ South Florida O/U 58

It’s no secret at this point, even as an undefeated team, the Bearcats are fighting for their College Football Playoff lives. They need to beat the teams they are supposed to and win convincingly to sway the playoff committee. Unfortunately for South Florida, they are ripe for the picking, coming into this game on the heels of a two-game losing streak. Clayton Tune of the Houston Cougars was able to throw for 385 yards and three touchdowns last week, and the Bulls are 109th in passing yards per game allowed.

Cincinnati’s Jerome Ford averages 6.2 yards per carry. Stopping the run isn’t something the Bulls do exceptionally well. They yield the 12th-most rushing yards per game and eighth-most yards per carry. I expect the Bearcats to be able to control this game and do whatever they want. It’s a big spread, but I expect them to cover it and win by four touchdowns.

The Pick: Cincinnati -23.5

Wyoming @ Boise State (-14) O/U 48.5

After getting off to a four-game winning streak to start the season, the Wyoming Cowboys dropped four straight games. However, some of those contests were within striking distance, and they got back in the win column last week, picking up a 31-17 victory over Colorado State. Three of their four losses have come by 11 points or fewer. They play at a slow and methodical pace, running the ball at the 15th-highest rate in the country. They also do it reasonably well, as they’ve rushed for 197.1 yards per game.

On the flip side, Boise State averages 30.4 points per game, which ranks 41st. Quarterback Hank Bachmeier has led them to 276.3 passing yards per game, which is good enough for 26th in the nation.  However, Wyoming has allowed the second-fewest passing yards per game (150.1 yards). The Cowboys also sit 15th in the country in opponent drive yards gained per offensive play.

Given how Wyoming plays their opponent and how closely contested their matchups are shows that getting two touchdowns is an early birthday present.

The Pick: Wyoming +14
