Fenway Sports Group, LLC, is in advanced talks to purchase the Pittsburgh Penguins. The ownership group that controls the Boston Red Sox engaged in talks with current owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle on the purchase of the NHL franchise. Lemieux and Burkle have owned the Penguins since 1999.

According to reports, the board of Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Liverpool F.C. and Roush Fenway Racing among other interests, will vote to approve the deal on Thursday.

It is thought that Lemieux, whose Hall of Fame career with the Penguins spanned 17 seasons, will retain an ownership stake in the team. The Penguins are one of the most successful NHL franchises, winning five Stanley Cups since joining the league in 1967. Lemieux helped win two of those as a player while winning three as an owner.

The sale is subject to NHL approval.
