The Chicago Bears’ pass rush has struggled in recent weeks without Khalil Mack on the field. In wake of his injury and in need of some additional pass rushers, the Bears have signed LB Bruce Irvin to a contract.

The details of the contract have yet to be announced, but it will likely be a one-year deal with incentives and performance bonuses attached to it. Irvin’s addition isn’t earth-shattering, but any reinforcements that can help rush the passer are helpful. Khalil Mack is a hard player to replace, but Irvin eases his loss just a tad.

The Player

Irvin played his college ball at West Virginia and was the 15th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks. In addition to playing for Seattle, Irvin has made stops in Oakland (now Las Vegas), Atlanta, and Carolina. Irvin last suited up with the Seahawks again during the 2020 season.

In 121 career games, Irvin has 52.0 sacks, 64 tackles for a loss, and 118 QB hits. In addition, the linebacker has 308 career tackles.

At 34 years old, Irvin is likely only a shell of the player he was in his prime, but he is still a useful pass rusher in the right situation. Opposite of Robert Quinn, and potentially playing alongside Trevis Gipson, Akiem Hicks, and Bilal Nichols, Irvin is in a good position to make an impact, even if it is limited.

The Bears host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Soldier Field. Starting at noon CST, the Bears have a tough task ahead of them trying to defend Lamar Jackson. The former MVP has 2,447 yards through the air and 639 yards on the ground this season. Mind you, those numbers have come in only nine games.
