In Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, Bears’ quarterback Justin Fields injured his ribs and Andy Dalton came in as the backup. With a quick turnaround that will see the Bears play on Thanksgiving Day in Detroit, Fields’ status was in question. The team wasted no time naming Dalton the starter for the game Thursday.

Andy Dalton entered Sunday’s game and delivered a drive down the field, capitalizing with a bomb to Darnell Mooney. The Bears’ defense still found a way to lose despite Dalton’s late spark. Fan reactions to the game again brought up head coach Matt Nagy’s competency. It also recirculated the idea that Dalton would have been better as the Bears starter for this season.

Dalton started the year as Chicago’s QB1 until he exited early in Week 2 vs. the Bengals with a leg injury. Fields replaced him and assumed the starting role. The rookie had early struggles but showed positive development as of late, one of the only bright spots for Chicago this season.

Justin Fields is the Bears’ long-term option at quarterback. When healthy, he needs to play. Any other decision by Nagy would only worsen his image with the front office and an already disgruntled fan base. Fields’ status for the Bears’ December 5th game against Arizona is unknown. Bears fans can only hope he heals in time so he can continue his development.
