On Monday, the Chicago Cubs made another move under the radar. In a trade with the newly renamed Cleveland Guardians, the Cubs acquired outfielder Harold Ramirez for cash considerations.

Ramirez has spent three seasons at the league’s highest level. The Colombia native played 119 games in 2019 with the Miami Marlins, before playing only three games in 2020. In 2021, Ramirez appeared in 99 games with Cleveland.

During his 2021 campaign, Ramirez slashed .268/.305/.398 with seven home runs and 41 RBIs. In addition, the 27-year-old added 21 doubles and 33 runs scored. Although not a huge power bat, Ramirez provides necessary depth that can play at the MLB level if injuries occur in 2022. His number of doubles is encouraging. Over a 162-game pace, he would average 34 doubles despite only an 11-home run pace over the same span.

Its not the flashiest move, but what Jed Hoyer and the rest of the front office continue to do is encouraging. They’re building early depth this offseason, and very well may add a large name or two in free agency. Although the team isn’t trying to fine tune their roster to compete for a title, a playoff caliber group for 2022 is something Cubs fans can be excited about.
