Brian Kelly is expected to leave Notre Dame for the LSU head coaching job, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

Kelly is in his 11th season at the helm for the Fighting Irish, with more than 100 wins as the all-time winningest coach in program history. Notre Dame is ranked No. 6 by the College Football Playoff selection committee. The Irish finished their regular season 11-1 after a 45-14 win Saturday at Stanford.

Kelly guided the Irish to the 2012 BCS National Championship Game and the CFP twice in the past three years. However, the Irish fell in the semifinal each time to Clemson in 2018 and Alabama in 2021. Notre Dame is 5-5 in postseason games under Kelly, who signed a contract extension in 2020 that runs until after the 2024 season.

Irish defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman will be the top in-house candidate to replace Kelly, who hired Freeman away from Cincinnati last year. Freeman’s former boss, Luke Fickell, could also be a candidate. Iowa State’s Matt Campbell will likely be a potential suitor for the Irish as well.

LSU agreed to part ways with former coach Ed Orgeron on Oct. 17, but kept the national championship-winning coach on staff throughout the regular season.
