Buzz is at a fever pitch for Marvel’s upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home. The third MCU Spider-Man movie is slated to release on December 17, 2021. While the previous two entries have been massively successful for both Sony and Disney, No Way Home marked the end of the agreement for Disney to use the Spider-Man character in the MCU. Disney acquired the bulk of their outstanding characters when they purchased FOX in 2018, but Sony still holds the rights to Spider-Man and the subsequent characters like Venom and Morbius.
In an interview with Fandango, Sony producer Amy Pascal shared that the vision for Spider-Man in the MCU has grown:
I think it is important to note that Pascal only calls out the NEXT Spider-Man film as containing Tom Holland, and then separately calls out three more films to come. Holland hasn’t been shy about not wanting to play the friendly neighborhood spider forever.
It could well be that No Way Home gives us multiple options to be the ‘new’ Spider-Man. Hopefully, it comes in the form of a real-life Miles Morales. Maybe we get a Tobey Maguire/Andrew Garfield buddy cop Spider-Man spinoff, or a visit from Spider Ham. Honestly, if the MCU just gives me Mephisto already, it doesn’t really matter who is or isn’t in any future movies. I’ll be happy as a clam.
