Will the Cubs Do Anything Significant Before Dec. 1?

The Cubs haven’t done much this winter despite claiming to be ready to improve the roster. Will something happen before December 1?

It’s the question that every Cubs fan is wondering entering Monday, November 29. When, if at all, will the Cubs sign someone of significance this winter? Currently, the Cubs’ most notable addition was the Wade Miley claim a few weeks back. Since then, the team has only added a depth outfielder and depth pitcher to their organization.

Where do the Cubs go from here? Teams such as the New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Texas Rangers have been very active. In fact, over the last few days, all of these teams have made serious moves. The Angels added Noah Syndergaard and Michael Lorenzen to their rotation, the Mets signed Starlin Marte and Max Scherzer, and the Rangers spent big on Jon Gray and Marcus Semien. The Cubs, on the other hand, continue to sit around and watch the rest of the league have interest in numerous free agents.

The Cubs need to do something. Jed Hoyer has made it clear that he doesn’t plan on trying to “win the offseason”, but the Cubs cannot claim they’ll have a playoff roster without adding something more than Miley to the current roster.

What could the Cubs do to appease the fan base? Certainly, an addition such as Marcus Stroman would be a good start, as he fills a need. That said, the Cubs need at least one or two more bats for the 2022 season. Even if just one-year contracts, some level of addition is necessary if the Cubs are truly building a playoff roster in 2022.

There are plenty of things the Cubs can do to improve their roster. However, will they do anything before the impending stoppage? Probably not. If that is the case, then Cubs fans will be waiting for a while for the Cubs to do something worth talking about.

I’ve been kicking at that football for years now, but Lucy (the Cubs FO) keeps pulling it out from underneath me riiiiiiight as I expect to make contact. I think that at the end of this off season I might just go somewhere else. Can’t say I’ll ever be a Mets or Angels fan, but they sure look more fun to watch come 2022…I might even be able to root for the Angels for a year for the sake of Trout’s hunt for a ring. 30 years since WGN made me a Cubs fan with free games after school. I think Theo and Jed have exhausted my excuses over the last few years the way they are always promissing some sort of change or action and quietly providing the same darn thing. I’m just tired. And I’m certainly done supporting (even with my attention) the Cubs until they decide to be a big market team again. I could stomach another round of tanking if they just admitted it was the plan. Especially if they made if fun with players like Wisdom, Tank, and the recently missed Lorenzen chasing being an effective two way player. Just be honest, make it fun, and drop the prices until you consider the team worth opening up the wallet. It ain’t rocket science. Just don’t act like you’re doing something when you’re standing pat (or worse, burning down the house) and then price yourselves out of the very mild (at best) interest you might garner with your tepid actions.
