Reichel, the Blackhawks’ top prospect, suffered a concussion Sunday night in the third period against the Milwaukee Admirals. The 19-year-old forward lost his footing and crashed face-first into the boards, with a hit at the end by Milwaukee’s Matt Donovan.
Reichel skated off the ice hunched over with some assistance from a team trainer and defenseman Ian Mitchell.
Here’s a look at what happened on the play and him exiting the ice:
Reichel has scored a team-high seven goals and 12 points in 15 games with the IceHogs this season. If healthy, the Blackhawks are expected to grant him permission to play for Germany in the World Junior Championship in December and January in Alberta, Canada (Edmonton-Red Deer). He did not play in last year’s tournament because he had COVID-19. Reichel will likely be a strong candidate to play for Germany in the 2022 Winter Olympics in February in Beijing.
More Injury Updates
The IceHogs also announced forwards Brett Connolly (right leg) and Kale Howarth (right shoulder) and defenseman Michael Krutil (left hand) will miss time.
Connolly and Krutil are each expected to miss 1-2 weeks, while Howarth will be out two weeks. Connolly, a 2018 Stanley Cup champion with the Washington Capitals, is second to Reichel in points on the team with 11 (five goals, six assists) in 14 games. Krutil, a 2020 fourth-round pick by Chicago, has zero points in seven games during his second season. Howarth, a 2017 fifth-round pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets, signed an AHL contract with the IceHogs this offseason. He has one goal in three games this season.
Rockford plays three games this week and the next week.
