The players are currently locked out as MLB and the Players Association negotiate a new CBA. However, the three days leading up to the lockout were very busy. For the Cubs, that included signing backup catcher Yan Gomes, outfielder Clint Frazier, and big-ticket starting pitcher Marcus Stroman. Now, a report has surfaced indicating the Cubs are one of two teams most likely to sign Carlos Correa.
Mike Rodriguez is an MLB Insider Journalist for Univision. He is a reputable name although readers may not be familiar with him. Most recently, he first reported the terms of Javier Baez’s deal with the Detroit Tigers.
The Correa rumors for the Cubs are heating up due to the recruiting efforts from Stroman. Rodriguez’s tweet above roughly translates as follows:
“Carlos Correa [Cubs] and [Yankees] are the 2 teams most likely to sign the Campo-Corto since they are the most fluid negotiations at the moment, a source confirms that Correa called Báez to ask him how the organization is treated from Chicago.”
Twitter translation for Mike Rodriguez’s tweet
It’s a rough translation, but Rodriguez claims Carlos Correa called fellow Puerto Rican Javier Baez to ask him about the Cubs. Although things ended in a manner most Cubs fans didn’t want, there is hope that Baez still has love for Chicago and the fans. If that is the case, having Baez’s opinion and Stroman’s recruiting efforts might be enough to land the top shortstop on the open market.
Unfortunately, the Cubs will not be able to negotiate with Correa until after the lockout ends, whenever that may be. However, players will continue to analyze their futures during the stoppage. Based on the facts, it feels like the stars are aligning for Carlos Correa to become the newest Chicago Cub.
UPDATE – 12/3/21, 1:21 PM CST: Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports the call between Correa and Baez did not take place.
