Former New York Red Bulls head coach and Chicago Fire legend Chris Armas will join Ralf Rangnick’s coaching staff at Manchester United. The move has yet to be formally announced, but ESPN’s Taylor Twellman reported the addition.

Armas’ relationship with Rangnick stems from their time together in New York where Rangnick was the Head of Sport and Development.

Chris Armas is seen as one of the greatest MLS midfielders of all time. He is also a Ring of Fire inductee (2009). Armas appeared 214 times in a Fire uniform, 212 of them starts. He scored eight goals and registered 20 assists. He also earned 66 caps for the U.S. National Team.

While a legend on the pitch, Armas falls flat when one examines his managerial career. Seen as one of the top up-and-coming American managers, New York Red Bulls hired Armas as head coach in 2018.

He led Red Bulls to a Supporter’s Shield and semifinal appearances in both the MLS Playoffs and CONCACAF Champions League during his first season in charge. Despite that, Red Bulls fired Armas after his second year in charge when New York finished sixth in the Eastern Conference.

He then joined Toronto FC before the 2021 season. Toronto relieved Armas of his duties six months into his tenure north of the border after winning just two of his first 15 matches in charge.

Ralf Rangnick is now the interim manager at Manchester United after the club fired Ole Gunnar Solskjær last month.
