The Chicago Cubs made one selection in the Rule 5 Draft on Wednesday. The team selected LHP Conner Menez from the San Francisco Giants with the fifth pick in the first round.

Menez, 26, has been in the Giants’ system since 2016. That year, the Giants used the 425th overall pick (14th round) to select Menez out of The Master’s University in California.

For most of his minor league career, the southpaw was a starting pitcher for the Giants. In 2021, Menez was used more as a relief pitcher, making only five starts in 26 total appearances. He pitched to a 6.75 ERA with 45 strikeouts and 29 walks.

Menez made his MLB debut in 2019 but only pitched in a handful of games at the big league level over the last three years. In 2021, Menez only appeared in eight games for the Giants but pitched to a respectable 3.86 ERA.

This Rule 5 selection feels like a solid depth move for the Cubs. The front office clearly likes something about Menez. With the pitching lab, the team may be able to tap into Menez’s potential and make him a useful bullpen arm in 2022.
