Checking In On Kyle Schwarber’s Market

Likely a consolation prize for the suitors who do not land Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber’s market will be interesting to track when the lockout ends.

During the postseason, I wrote in-depth about why the Cubs should consider a reunion with former outfielder and World Series hero Kyle Schwarber.

Schwarber captured the hearts of Red Sox fans in the second half and it continued into October, helping Boston make a shocking ALCS appearance after defeating the Yankees in the AL Wild Card and Rays in the ALDS.

Fast forward two months, and before the lockout, it seems Schwarber’s camp was looking for a three-year, $60 million deal, per the Miami Herald.

“The Marlins have reached out on both Schwarber and Nick Castellanos. But Castellanos, at this point, is viewed as too expensive. Schwarber ultimately might be, too, but the Marlins remain in contention for him; the current asking price is a three-year deal in the $60 million range, and the Marlins must decide if they’re willing to go that high.”

WHY IT MATTERS

Miami is known for spending as little as possible. But if they do shell out money, as they did with Giancarlo Stanton, they eventually trade the recipients of those contracts. It’s similar to the Rockies giving Nolan Arenado a contract extension and trading him just one season into the contract.

Nonetheless, this report shouldn’t have the Marlins — and especially the Cubs — pinching pennies for what I believe would be a consolation prize for the suitors who do not land Nick Castellanos.

Schwarber posted 3.2 bWAR in a career season with Washington and Boston. He played corner outfield and even first base. Long thought of as the perfect designated hitter, Schwarber has become a viable outfielder as his career has progressed.

It will be interesting to see his market after Castellanos signs post-lockout. Unfortunately, we’re only six days in and it doesn’t seem to be ending anytime soon.
