Matt Nagy Could Be Fired Mid-Season Due To New Rule

NFL head coaching interviews can now take place during the last two weeks of the season, but the role needs to be open first.

Abysmal loss after abysmal loss, Matt Nagy continues to “ask the whys” regarding what went wrong for the Bears that particular week. Meanwhile, the only “why” Bears fans are asking is “Why the hell has Matt Nagy not been fired yet?” The time may almost be upon the Bears.

While the Bears have yet to fire a coach mid-season in franchise history, Nagy could potentially be the first due to options afforded by a new rule. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported details of an NFL memo regarding updates to the Rooney Rule in October.

The memo states a team can begin interviewing candidates for a head coaching role during the last two weeks of the regular season with the consent of the candidate’s employer. The only issue is, a head coaching role needs to be open.

Previously, teams had to wait until a candidate’s season came to an end. If one candidate’s final game was the last of the regular season but the other was a coordinator of a Super Bowl team, the vacancy could take until well after the Super Bowl to fill.

The Rooney Rule also focuses on hiring ethnic minority candidates for coaching and front-office jobs. Teams must interview a minimum of two minority candidates.

Getting Ahead of the Curve

If the McCaskeys open their eyes and ears to the obvious, they should know Nagy is done in Chicago. There are several potential head coaching candidates in coordinator roles that could be Bears’ targets. That list of names includes Kellen Moore, Brian Daboll, Greg Roman, and Byron Leftwich, among others.

Once a head coach is in place, the Bears can expedite coordinator hires. Top to bottom, the organization needs to have competent personnel all on the same page. The storied franchise needs to produce winning football soon, so getting ahead of the curve on a head coaching hire should be the Bears’ top priority.
