Announced via a memo earlier today, the NFL booster requirements for tier 1 and 2 personnel are now mandatory. The individuals must receive their booster shots before December 27. The league states that any individual who completed the two-shot vaccine six or more months ago must receive the booster.

Tier 1 and 2 Personnel

This memo does not affect the players directly. Tier 1 and 2 personnel are coaches, front office employees, and any individuals that may interact with the players. They now have exactly two weeks to get a booster shot or suffer the consequences.

So far, the NFL hasn’t said anything regarding the players taking booster shots. At this point, they are not requiring the booster shot and this is strictly for front-office employees and/or coaches. The league is continuing the conversation with the union on offering players booster shots on-site at team facilities.

Getting Ahead of the Curve

After the 2020 season’s plethora of rescheduling conflicts, the NFL took a big step in stopping that from happening again in 2021. Prior to the season, the league announced new COVID-19 rules. If a team has an outbreak of COVID-19 amongst unvaccinated players and games are canceled, the team forfeits the game.

We’re seeing this go on in the NBA right now with the Chicago Bulls. The NBA canceled the Bulls’ next two games due to a lack of players. Most of the Bulls’ starting lineup is out with COVID-19 or at least in close contact. The NFL booster requirements are only one step in avoiding a situation like that, but it’s a start. There are 82 games in an NBA season, which is much easier to work with. The remaining few weeks of the 2021 NFL regular season and the upcoming postseason would be much more difficult.
