Bulls Forward Patrick Williams Is Progressing In His Recovery

While Williams’ return to game action is still very much to be determined, his progression on the court as of late is a positive development.

Bulls fans haven’t heard much about forward Patrick Williams since he dislocated his left wrist in late October. The initial diagnosis ruled him out for the rest of the regular season with a chance of returning for the playoffs.

It seems the rookie is banking on that chance to be back for the postseason. Williams has been seen shooting at halftime of games, and the latest reports indicate he spent the Christmas holiday getting shots up in the gym.

Additionally, reporters at his shootaround noticed a switch from a hard cast to a soft cast. This is a good sign that his healing process is moving along smoothly.

Williams’ Void

After losing Patrick Williams, the Bulls have been dealing with a hole in their defense at the 4 spot. Williams was able to defend the wing and everything bigger, including the center position. While he was an inconsistent scorer, his presence on the glass was crucial.

So far, the Bulls haven’t found a perfect solution at power forward for a full four quarters. Javonte Green has been a pleasant surprise, but he can’t guard the variety of players Williams took on. The undersized Alize Johnson has been cut. Tony Bradley is as good of an offensive piece as Williams was. Alfonzo McKinnie looks to be part of the solution after signing a full-year deal. But that’s only judging a small sample size against teams obliterated by COVID-19.

What’s Next For Williams?

The Bulls requested a Disabled Player Exception in Williams’ absence, but the NBA denied the move. The decision could be foreshadowing that the league predicts Williams will return this year. Outside of a catastrophic collapse, the Bulls should make the playoffs this year.

Depending on how Williams progresses through his reported 4-6 month recovery timeline, there’s a legitimate chance he could be ready to go when the playoffs begin on April 16. There’s even an outside chance he could return in the final month of the regular season if all goes well.

While his return to game action is still very much to be determined, his progression on the court as of late is a positive development.
