The Chicago Bears announced Andy Dalton as the starting quarterback for Week 17 against the New York Giants. The team had previously placed Dalton on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Dec. 17.

Dalton spent a week on the list. The Bears activated him on Dec. 24 but they made him unavailable for Week 16 vs. Seattle. Nick Foles started the game with undrafted free agent Ryan Willis serving as the backup quarterback. Sunday will be Dalton’s fifth start as the Bears’ quarterback and his seventh game in total.

In six games with Chicago, Dalton has thrown for slightly over 1,000 yards, six touchdowns, and six interceptions. He’s completed 64% of his passes and took nine sacks on the year. Andy Dalton has thrown for just shy of 35,000 yards in his career with a 2.7% TD:INT ratio.

Nick Foles as a Backup Quarterback

The Bears will utilize Nick Foles as the backup quarterback this Sunday. Last week against Seattle, Foles threw for 250 yards and one touchdown. He didn’t throw an interception, recovered the one fumble he had, and completed nearly 69% of his passes.

Matt Nagy and the Chicago Bears decided not to rush Justin Fields back into NFL action this week. That is likely due to an ankle injury still plaguing him because he did not practice in full capacity yesterday. If the Bears decide not to activate Fields again in 2021 because of his injury, that is likely the smart and conservative approach.
