American Hockey League Extends 2021-22 Season to April 30

The 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs are now expected to finish before June 30.

The American Hockey League Board of Governors approved the extension of the 2021-22 calendar by six days to April 30, the League announced Saturday.

“Nearly all of our 31 teams have seen their schedules impacted by COVID-related postponements,” AHL President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Howson said in a statement. “Adding time to the end of the regular season will give our clubs more opportunities to reschedule these games.”

The 2022 Calder Cup Playoffs are expected to finish before June 30.

The Chicago Wolves (Carolina Hurricanes) start the 2022 calendar year with an AHL-best 42 points and 20-4-1-1 record. The Rockford IceHogs (Chicago Blackhawks) are on the outside looking in of the Calder Cup Playoffs with 24 points (11-11-1-1). They are two points back of the fourth-place Iowa Wild in the Central Division. The top four teams in each division qualify for the playoffs.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the AHL has not held a playoff since 2019 when the Wolves fell in five games to the Charlotte Checkers in the Calder Cup Final.
