Following a 29-3 win over the New York Giants on Sunday, the Chicago Bears revealed an interesting piece of information on Monday. According to reports, the belief is that, if healthy, Justin Fields will start in Week 18 against the Minnesota Vikings.

Justin Fields has missed the last two games due to an ankle injury he suffered in the team’s loss on Monday Night Football to Minnesota. Nick Foles started against Seattle and Andy Dalton was the Week 17 starter. With the two veterans, the Bears picked up a pair of wins.

There is a sensible reason for Fields to start in Week 18. However, if the future is really the priority for the Bears, there is zero sense in starting Fields to risk an injury. Naturally, additional playing time for the rookie is beneficial. However, starting one of the other two quarterbacks is likely the best move for the Bears.

This season, Fields has thrown for 1,870 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. In addition, the rookie has run for 420 yards and two touchdowns. Although the numbers aren’t spectacular on paper, Fields has shown moments of brilliance in his rookie campaign. Still, his health is important for the next regime, so starting him in what is likely Matt Nagy’s last game makes zero sense.

The Bears and Vikings kick off at noon CST on Sunday in Minnesota. As the week progresses, fans will get a better idea as to who the starter will be in the final game of the 2021 season for Chicago.

Playing all the rookies including Fields makes perfect sense.
