The Chicago Blackhawks announced on Wednesday that they traded left winger Alexander Nylander to the Pittsburgh Penguins. In return, the Blackhawks receive 26-year-old forward Sam Lafferty. Nylander’s injury kept him off the ice for over a calendar year and he has not played a game in the NHL in 2021-22.

Alexander Nylander’s Short Time with the Chicago Blackhawks

Alexander Nylander played one season with the Blackhawks in 2019-20. In 65 games with Chicago, Nylander scored 10 goals, assisted on 16 others, and sported a +/- rating of -2 for the season. He averages just over 12 minutes of ice time in his four-year career with a career-high of just under 13 minutes with the Buffalo Sabres in 2017-18. Nylander has been recovering from a knee injury he sustained in December 2020 and he hasn’t played in the NHL since. He has spent time with the Rockford IceHogs this season.

Sam Lafferty

Lafferty is in the middle of his third NHL season. In 94 games over three years, Lafferty scored six goals, all of which came in 2019-20, but he did assist on seven other goals that same year. He has recorded 15 assists in his career and averages 9:35 of ice time. Lafferty only played in 10 games for the Penguins in 2021-22 but will likely see more playing time in Chicago.

This trade sends Alexander Nylander to his third NHL team. In exchange, the Blackhawks get another body to try out among the forward group.
