Marcus Freeman will hire a familiar face in Cincinnati special teams coordinator Brian Mason for the same role at Notre Dame, according to multiple reports.
Mason, a Zionsville, Indiana native, spent the past four seasons coaching special teams for the Bearcats and as director of recruiting in 2017-18. He worked with Freeman at Cincinnati (2018-20), and as a graduate assistant at Purdue (2013-14) and Kent State (2012).
Under Mason, the Bearcats ranked first in the FBS with six blocked kicks and punts this past season.
Mason will be tasked with replacing kicker Jonathan Doerer and punter Jay Bramblett. Josh Bryan and Harrison Leonard were behind Doerer, and each kicked one extra point against Georgia Tech. Bryce McFerson, who switched his commitment from Wake Forest to Notre Dame, figures to be the Irish punter next fall. Michael Vinson (long snapper) and Chris Tyree (kick/punt returner) will return.
Freeman has three more staff openings to fill: offensive line, wide receivers, and defensive coordinator. Jeff Quinn (offensive line) and Del Alexander (wide receivers) are each out of their jobs, and the defensive coordinator position is open after Freeman’s promotion to head coach.
