The Chicago Bears fired head coach Matt Nagy and general manager Ryan Pace on Monday morning, a pair of moves a long time coming. Without a playoff win in seven years, it’s easy to see why. According to Adam Hoge of NBC Sports, the Bears are planning to interview Indianapolis Colts’ Director of College Scouting Morocco Brown with Pace now out of the picture. NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed the Bears’ request to interview Brown.

As Hoge reports, Morocco Brown has familiarity with the McCaskeys and Ted Phillips. He was the Bears’ Assistant Director of Pro Personnel from 2001-07. Brown has been with the Colts for the last five years, where he worked alongside Chris Ballard.

Ballard was a name floating around the Bears before they hired Ryan Pace. The Bears almost hired Ballard but instead chose Pace and then forced John Fox upon him. Apparently, Ballard is pushing other NFL teams to inquire about Morocco Brown as general manager. The duo worked the 2018 draft together where they acquired Quinten Nelson, one of the best offensive linemen in the league, in addition to All-Pro linebacker Darius Leonard.

Morocco Brown as a General Manager Candidate

It’s safe to say Morocco Brown knows what he’s doing and could be a good fit as general manager for the Chicago Bears. The Atlanta Falcons interviewed him in 2021 for their own general manager position but nothing came to fruition. In 2020, Brown was the leading candidate to take over as Washington’s general manager as well.

Morocco Brown has all the credentials teams typically look for in a general manager and the Bears are no different. He has experience in scouting for multiple teams and he played a part in selecting a seriously stacked 2018 Colts’ draft class.

The question becomes, do the McCaskeys make the hire and let him choose the next head coach? Or do they hire a head coach first, as Adam Hoge suggested, and then bring in a new GM? It could spell trouble if they hire the coach first. That choice could sway the decision of any potential GM candidate.
