The 31-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings is the final nail in the coffin. The Chicago Bears fired Matt Nagy following a 6-11 season in 2021. The media speculated for weeks that this would happen.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the McCaskeys have made it official.

The Bears’ 2018 Season Was a Fluke

Who would have thought the Chicago Bears would win the NFC North with a 12-4 record in 2018? Probably no one. But that is exactly what happened in Matt Nagy’s first season with the Bears. It ended in quite possibly the worst way it could have, but we won’t revisit that.

Many have credited recently fired Broncos head coach Vic Fangio with the Bears’ success in 2018. The defense carried the team throughout that season because the offense struggled and was only good enough not to lose.

Matt Nagy’s Record with the Bears

Following their fantastic division-winning season in 2018, the Chicago Bears went 8-8 in consecutive years under Matt Nagy. The offense worsened and Mitchell Trubisky wasn’t improving the way most expected him to. The McCaskeys brought Nagy in to groom the quarterback Ryan Pace drafted, a job the previous regime couldn’t do. It turns out Nagy couldn’t get it done either.

Nagy’s failures and inevitable downfall were the culprits behind the disappointment over the past three seasons. Matt Nagy’s tenure in Chicago was tumultuous, to say the least. His first losing season in Chicago is the final one he’ll coach and that stems from unrealistic expectations. He ended his tenure in Chicago with a final record of 34-31.

Where the Bears go from here is an utter mystery.
