Elston joined Notre Dame with Brian Kelly in 2010, and spent four years as defensive line coach. Elston took on the recruiting in 2015 and remained at Notre Dame even after Kelly left for LSU in late November. Irish head coach Marcus Freeman used Elston as a defensive play-caller in the 37-35 loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl.
Elston, who played outside linebacker from 1993-96 at Michigan, will return to his alma mater. The 47-year-old coach started his post-playing career as a student assistant, video intern, and graduate assistant at Michigan.
Freeman now has two coaching vacancies to fill: defensive line and coordinator. Freeman will also need to make an additional push to keep the Irish’s elite defensive line recruits for the 2023 class from following Elston to Michigan.
