Blackhawks Defenseman Calvin de Haan Fined for Tripping Cole Caufield

The play was certainly worthy of a tripping penalty, but the officials did not call one at the time.

The NHL’s Department of Player safety has fined Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Calvin de Haan $2,500 for a “dangerous trip” against Montreal’s Cole Caufield.

The play occurred early in the third period of Thursday’s Blackhawks vs. Canadiens game. As the players converged behind the net, de Haan extended his leg and took out Caufield’s, causing the Habs forward to fall to the ice.

The play was certainly worthy of a tripping penalty, but the officials did not call one at the time.

Regardless, the NHL has now weighed in on the matter. It won’t make up for a what-could-have-been Montreal power play in a tie game, but Calvin de Haan’s wallet will be $2.5K lighter due to the infraction.
