Freeman is expected to hire former Ohio State linebackers coach Al Washington to be run game coordinator and defensive line coach, according to Pete Thamel of ESPN. Pete Sampson of The Athletic also reported Washington was Freeman’s top choice to replace Elston.
The 37-year-old Washington announced his departure from Ohio State on Saturday, with new Buckeyes defensive coordinator Jim Knowles expected to take over the position group.
During his time in Columbus since 2019, Washington helped coach three linebackers in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft and played a role in recruiting.
Prior to returning to his hometown of Columbus, Washington coached linebackers at Michigan (2018) and defensive line at Cincinnati (2017) and Boston College (2012, 2016). Washington’s lone season at Cincinnati was Freeman’s first campaign with the Bearcats as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
The news of Freeman hiring Washington comes shortly after Thamel reported Lance Taylor is leaving Notre Dame as run game coordinator/running backs coach to be Louisville’s offensive coordinator.
