Sad news swept through the Chicago sports landscape on Monday. Longtime Chicago sportscaster Les Grobstein was found dead at the age of 69.
Grobstein was a staple in Chicago sports for over 50 years. The late-night radio host got his start calling Northwestern basketball games back in 1970. Over the course of his career, Grobstein worked for CBS Radio, Sportsphone Chicago, and WSCR, “The Score”.
Despite his time on radio, Grobstein “went viral” well before it was ever a thing. In 1983, Grobstein played the recording of former Chicago Cubs manager Lee Elia’s tirade following a loss that left the Cubs with a 5-14 record. The Elia tirade might be one of Grobstein’s shining moments in Chicago sports, but he had a larger impact on those who listened and called in. In fact, On Tap Sports Net contributor Joey Ricotta recalled an awesome story about Grobstein.
This latest story shows the impact Les Grobstein had on Chicago sports fans. He was a true legend in the industry and his contributions to the Chicago sports landscape will live on long after today. Rest in peace, Les Grobstein.
