With the Chicago Bears interviewing more head coach and GM candidates than a college student swipes through Tinder profiles, another name has entered the picture. Although previously known, the Bears will officially interview Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich for their head coaching vacancy later this week.
As indicated by Ian Rapoport, Leftwich has already interviewed with the Jacksonville Jaguars earlier this offseason. Leftwich was the 7th overall pick by the Jaguars in 2003 and spent four seasons as their quarterback. Following his time in Jacksonville, he spent three seasons with the Steelers, one with the Falcons, and one with the Buccaneers before retiring. He has also won a Super Bowl as both a player and coach.
When analyzing Leftwich as a potential head coach, a few things stand out. For starters, Leftwich feels like the perfect mentor for Justin Fields. Both quarterbacks were first-round selections, and both have elongated throwing motions in comparison to other quarterbacks. If anyone understands what Fields is enduring in Chicago, it’s Leftwich. His pedigree and time working with Bruce Arians and Tom Brady certainly don’t hurt either.
The Bears’ GM and head coaching searches are going to last for a few weeks yet. However, it is encouraging to see the team do their due diligence and interview as many candidates as possible.
