Within the same 24 hours of reports that the Chicago Bears will interview Byron Leftwich, the team will also interview the other Buccaneers coordinator, Todd Bowles, this coming weekend.
The day before Bowles interviews with Chicago, he’ll also interview with NFC North rival Minnesota. The Vikings parted ways with their GM and head coach just as the Bears did after the conclusion of the season. Bowles has head coaching experience with the New York Jets from 2015-2018. Bowles served as defensive coordinator on Bruce Arians’ staffs as bookends to his head coaching stint.
Todd Bowles certainly is an interesting candidate, but not likely the best for the Bears. Although a defensive mastermind, Bowles did not experience much success as a head coach. The Jets went 10-6 in Bowles’ first season, but the Jets failed to win more than five games the following three seasons.
If Bowles is selected in Chicago, a lights-out offensive coordinator is a must. Bowles is known for his defensive mind, but the Bears are in desperate need of someone to fix the offense. If Bowles can secure a top OC candidate, then the hire makes sense. However, if he does not, then Bowles’ stint in Chicago might mirror Vic Fangio’s in Denver.
The Bucs’ DC will be a top candidate within this head coaching cycle. However, he’s likely not the best choice for the Chicago Bears.
