“I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him [Daniel Radcliffe] for,” said Yankovic.

Go ahead and file this under the “movies I didn’t know I needed until I heard of them” category. Roku announced it is releasing WEIRD: The Al Yankovic Story about the music industry’s favorite cover artist. Funny or Die and Tango are producing the movie. It will also be an exclusive release for the Roku channel. Alongside the announcement, Roku also shared that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will portray the titular Yankovic.

On the surface, this is awesome. Anything that results in more Weird Al is a huge win. The more I think about it the more I love it. Radcliffe will be forever known as Harry Potter, but he’s taken on a ton of roles that are OUT THERE. He played the most useful corpse in history in Swiss Army Man. Getting to learn the details of Weird Al’s legacy is going to be multiplied tenfold with Radcliffe in tow. Weird Al provided a bevy of quotes for the press release:

When my last movie UHF came out in 1989, I made a solemn vow to my fans that I would release a major motion picture every 33 years, like clockwork. I’m very happy to say we’re on schedule.

And I am absolutely thrilled that Daniel Radcliffe will be portraying me in the film. I have no doubt whatsoever that this is the role future generations will remember him for.

“Weird Al” Yankovic – Roku press release for Weird: the al yankovic story

The History of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story

The movie is being co-written by Yankovic and Eric Appel. Appel will also be directing. Appel wrote and directed a trailer version of Weird: The Al Yankovic Story in 2010, also for Funny or Die. The three-minute video stars Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul as Yankovic, and a number of other celebrities appear as well. If the “trailer” is any indication of what we have in store, buckle up baby. My hope is that we get a movie that is a slightly truer version of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Check out the 2010 video below:
