It hasn’t even been 24 hours since the Chicago Bears hired Matt Eberflus as their next head coach. But the burning question now becomes: how does this hire affect Justin Fields? Eberflus is a defensive guy and the Bears have definitely benefitted from that skillset in recent history. Now, the Bears have what looks like a franchise quarterback in Fields and they need to build around him. Are Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus the right guys to do it?

Ryan Poles is a former offensive lineman. We know that his goal will be protecting the quarterback. But where does Matt Eberflus fit there? His potential success with Justin Fields and this offense will be determined by how much he learned during his time in Indianapolis.

Matt Eberflus’ Takeaway from Indy

The Colts have been one of the better-managed professional football teams lately and Frank Reich took them in a fine direction for the last four seasons. They had a bad 2019 season, but the Colts were dealing with the aftermath of Andrew Luck’s retirement. Their identity was about to change but Reich led them through it and they’ve persevered.

Reich was thrown a nasty curveball with the quarterback struggles. In four years, the Colts went through a number of different quarterbacks and the coaching staff had to manage them all. He did a solid job given the circumstances.

Now, Matt Eberflus has the same objective in front of him, but he’s a defensive guy. He needs to take every ounce of knowledge he absorbed from Frank Reich and apply it. Justin Fields deserves a real mentor, not a guy who’s too wrapped up in his scheme.

A big part of this puzzle will be who Eberflus brings in as offensive coordinator. But it ultimately comes down to leading the entire group and not losing focus. The Chicago Bears head coach is more than just a schemer. He leads or he leaves.

At this point, why would a head coach hire assistant coaches? The assumption by the loudest voices seems to be that the head coach will be the mentor for the whole team, right? It’s amazing how Frank Reich (former quarterback) had a really good defense (hmmmm…). He did a great job for the Colts. He must be a defense-minded coach, right?

Orrrrr… maybe Elberflus hire someone for OC that has a ‘plan’ (a framework/structure) to develop the offensive scheme, and to teach Fields.

Sorry, just trying to follow the logic here.
