Friday’s Chicago Bears news cycle has been a whirlwind. New GM Ryan Poles and new head coach Matt Eberflus are not wasting time. With a number of position coaches and front office personnel undergoing interviews, the Bears are quickly building a staff. Now, per David Kaplan, the Bears are interviewing Pep Hamilton today for the offensive coordinator position.
Hamilton has bounced around in the NFL over the last few seasons. This past season, he was in Houston with the Texans as their QB coach and passing game coordinator. However, he has an incredible track record at both the college and NFL levels.
After starting his coaching career in 1997, Hamilton has made the rounds in the NFL and college as anything from a wide receivers coach, to quarterbacks coach, to offensive coordinator. In fact, Hamilton served as the OC at both Stanford and then in Indianapolis with Andrew Luck. Statistically, Luck’s 40-touchdown season in Indianapolis, and last two seasons at Stanford, were some of the best football the former Colt played. It feels like there is some correlation between Hamilton’s presence and Luck’s success.
In addition, Hamilton joined the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020 after the XFL folded. Hamilton was in charge of the DC Defenders before the league halted play. However, he helped Justin Herbert have perhaps the greatest rookie quarterback season in NFL history.
Another fun fact about Pep Hamilton is that he has a past with Chicago. Hamilton served as the quarterbacks coach for the Bears from 2007-2009.
Even last season, Davis Mills played pretty well with Hamilton’s guidance. There is a pattern suggesting Hamilton would be a great fit to work with if he is tasked with guiding a young Justin Fields for the foreseeable future.
