Traditionally, new head coaching hires, especially defensive coaches, will bring assistants along with them to their new team. It’s no different in Chicago. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Colts’ linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi is expected to join Matt Eberflus with the Chicago Bears.

Borgonzi has been with the Colts each of the last four years, joining when Eberflus took over as defensive coordinator. He played linebacker at Amherst College, where he was a three-year starter and became a captain his senior year.

Dave Borgonzi Coaching History

After coaching a few years as a graduate assistant at Syracuse and as an assistant secondary coach at Harvard, Borgonzi got his start in the NFL in 2011. He coached with the Cowboys, alongside Eberflus, as an offensive and defensive assistant from 2011-2013. While in Dallas, he helped with opponent scouting reports, weekly breakdowns, and worked with the scout team.

From 2014-2017, Borgonzi spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a defensive quality control and assistant linebackers coach. Lavonte David and Kwon Alexander are a couple of key names who flourished under Borgonzi, which helped the Bucs rank in the top 10 in yards allowed in 2015. Like Eberflus, preaching takeaways, Borgonzi’s Bucs forced the third-most takeaways in 2016.

In 2018, when Borgonzi joined Eberflus’ defensive staff in Indianapolis, the Colts had young linebackers, which featured four rookies in Skai Moore, Matthew Adams, Zaire Franklin, and most notably, Darius Leonard. They also had a second-year linebacker in Anthony Walker, who only started two games during his rookie year. Leonard was named First Team All-Pro and Defensive Rookie of the Year. Additionally, Leonard and Walker combined for the most tackles (267) of any linebacker duo in the NFL. Furthermore, he’s helped with the development of Bobby Okereke and Jordan Glasgow.

We’ll have to see what this means for the Bears, but it’s clear Eberflus has trust in Dave Borgonzi. He should have an immediate positive impact on the Bears’ linebackers given his track record.
