Former Blackhawks Coach Jeremy Colliton to Head Coach for Team Canada at 2022 Olympics

Colliton takes over for Claude Julien, who sustained fractured ribs during a team-building activity at a training camp in Switzerland.

Jeremy Colliton Canada Head Coach

Former Chicago Blackhawks head coach Jeremy Colliton will now serve as head coach for Canada’s men’s ice hockey team at the 2022 Winter Olympics because of an injury to Claude Julien.

Julien sustained fractured ribs after a fall on the ice during a team-building activity at a training camp in Switzerland, and will not be able to travel to Beijing. As a result, Canada general manager Shane Doan announced Sunday that he elevated Colliton from assistant coach to head coach.

Colliton was 87-92-26 in four seasons with the Blackhawks before the team fired him on Nov. 6, 2020. The 36-year-old coach was also 4-5 in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs, when Chicago defeated the Edmonton Oilers in four games before losing to the Vegas Golden Knights in five games in the best-of-7 Western Conference First Round.

“While it is difficult to fill in for a coach that has a pedigree like Claude Julien, I am honoured to be considered as the person to lead Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team as head coach,” Colliton said in a release. “We have a very close-knit, experienced coaching staff that has gained a lot of knowledge from Claude in our short time together, and I know our staff will continue to support each other as we look to achieve our goal of winning an Olympic gold medal.”

Jeremy Colliton will have former Rockford IceHogs goaltender Matt Tomkins – now with Frölunda HC of the SHL – among the 25 players on Team Canada.
