On Monday, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields spoke to the media after the introductions of Ryan Poles and Matt Eberflus. Fields’ press conference was short, only lasting around nine minutes. However, in that time, he spoke about a lot of good topics, mostly regarding the new GM and head coach.
Fields said such an interesting quote regarding having a defensive head coach. He said, “being on the offense, you know, you kind of know what the defense is doing, but you don’t fully know what they’re doing.” In addition, Fields added, “when you have a defensive head coach, he’s able to explain to you what [the defense’s] jobs are, what their certain assignments are in a certain coverage, so that’s a plus in having a defensive head coach.”
The Bears’ Situation
In today’s NFL, the popular belief is that you need an offensive head coach. However, if said head coach isn’t a Sean McVay type, they likely don’t know entirely what the defense is trying to do. In the Bears’ case, Eberflus will be able to give Fields that extra knowledge while he and OC Luke Getsy game plan the strategy offensively.
Given Fields’ response, it feels like Matt Nagy never gave him that extra knowledge needed, especially as a rookie quarterback. Defenses in the NFL are significantly more complex than at the collegiate level, so having someone who’s experienced success as a NFL defensive coordinator is important. Perhaps Fields takes the next step in reading defenses and excels in his second year.
The number one goal for the Bears in 2022 is to continue developing Fields. He has the ability to become the franchise quarterback this team has craved for the last 80+ years. Now, Matt Eberflus, Ryan Poles, and the rest of the staff need to put quality players around him while taking advantage of his talents. If they do that, the Bears can reclaim the NFC North.
