The Chicago Blackhawks have just one representative heading to the 2022 NHL All-Star Weekend, Alex DeBrincat. The shifty forward will compete in the NHL Breakaway Challenge, the league announced today.
DeBrincat is one of five skaters in the event. He will go up against Kirill Kaprizov (Minnesota Wild), Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks), Jack Hughes (New Jersey Devils), and Alex Pietrangelo (Vegas Golden Knights). Manon Rhéaume and Wyatt Russell will serve as the goalies for the competition.
This field should make for an entertaining event. In years past, players have utilized props, costumes, and help from teammates or family to spice up their attempts. Blackhawks fans surely remember Patrick Kane’s diving “Superman” goal from 2012.
Throughout his career, Alex DeBrincat has converted on four of 11 shootout attempts with one being a game-deciding goal. However, those stats don’t matter too much when it comes to a fun showcase such as the NHL Breakaway Challenge.
Still, DeBrincat may have a leg up on the competition, though he surely never planned it that way. He and Patrick Kane have finished pregame warmups several times this season by challenging Marc Andre-Fleury with their shootout moves in front of home crowds.
It will be interesting to see what he has up his sleeve for his breakaway attempts during his first NHL All-Star Weekend. The 2022 NHL All-Star Skills Competition takes place on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6:30 PM CST and will air on ESPN.
