Chicago Fire FC is close to signing Swiss international Xherdan Shaqiri, according to MLS’ Tom Bogert.

This would be the biggest signing for the club since bringing over Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich in 2017. Shaqiri has played for the likes of Bayern, Liverpool, and Inter Milan and was integral in ending Liverpool’s 30-year league title drought in 2020.

Xherdan Shaqiri reportedly handed in a transfer request to his current club, Lyon earlier this week. The 30-year-old is a dynamic midfielder that can play nearly anywhere in attack.

The Fire have been rumored to be in the mix for Shaqiri since the beginning of January, and it is important to note the connection between club and player. Fire Sporting Director Georg Heitz worked in the same capacity at Swiss club FC Basel. Shaqiri played there during Heitz’s tenure.

Chicago Fire owner Joe Mansueto has already engrained himself and the Fire into the Swiss soccer ecosystem. Mansueto purchased Swiss club FC Lugano last year and there have already been transfer dealings between the two clubs.
