Former Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith spent the last year as the defensive coordinator of the Houston Texans. Now that the Texans relinquished head coach David Culley after only one season, their head coaching woes continue. They fired Bill O’Brien, who went on to work with Nick Saban at Alabama. Houston sported a 4-13 record in 2021 which was actually worse than their 4-12 record in 2020.
Lovie Smith Has a Chance to Rebuild the Houston Texans
During his time with the Chicago Bears, Lovie Smith was beloved by nearly everyone. He coached the Bears for nine years, leading them to 81 wins and a .563 win percentage. Chicago made one Super Bowl appearance and was regularly competitive. In those nine years, Lovie Smith’s Bears had three losing seasons. Only Lovie’s first season as a head coach, 2004, resulted in fewer than seven wins.
The Houston Texans are one of the younger franchises in the NFL. Since 2002, they’ve played in 10 playoff games. They only won four of those.
The Texans finished last in the AFC South six times since their inception and if it wasn’t for the Jacksonville Jaguars it would have been much more. But they’ve also won the AFC South six times, including a franchise-best 12-4 season in 2012. They lost in the divisional round of the playoffs that year and then head coach Gary Kubiak was let go during the following season after an abysmal start.
The skill that Lovie Smith brought to the Chicago Bears was unparalleled at the time. But he could do it all over again in Houston. This defense-first style of coaching could be exactly what the Texans need to rebound after facing so much adversity over the last two seasons.
