The Chicago Blackhawks have more or less limped through the 2021 2022 season. Various stretches of the season have been marked by long-losing streaks and uninspiring play. That was not the case when the Blackhawks took on the New Jersey Devils at the madhouse on Friday night. Both Brandon Hagel and Patrick Kane recorded hat-tricks. Kirby Dach and Ryan Carpenter added tallies, and the Hawks ultimately defeated the Devils by a final of 8-5 in front of the home faithful.
The real story of the night was Brandon Hagel. That is something to say given the fact that Patrick Kane alone could have filled the highlight reel himself. Hagel who received high praise from interim Head Coach Derek King just days ago when asked about trade rumors surrounding the forward when King stated that “Hagel has got to stay here” was an absolute spark plug on the ice for the Hawks. Recording a hat-trick in his 100th career game, but also fired up the crowd after brawling with PK Subban after a dirty slew foot trip that occurred as he potted the empty netter to complete the feat.
Following the empty netter, a brawl ensued along the boards as a result of the trip. A jacked-up Hagel skated off in the final minute in grand fashion.
When asked in the postgame was asked about the altercation with Subban he responded with the following, as presented by Ben Pope from the Chicago Sun-Times.
Maybe Coach King was right. Maybe Brandon Hagel simply can’t be traded. He might just be the kind of player a team in need of a serious injection of excitement needs to build around.
