Disney announced that the Marvel live-action TV shows will be available to stream on their Disney+ platform starting March 16, 2022. This will include all of the Netflix-Marvel shows as well as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The news comes as a surprise to many, based on Disney’s previous family-friendly content strategy. I expected Disney to announce that the adult-oriented shows would appear on its other platform, Hulu.
What Arrives on March 16?
In addition to ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Disney+ will be rolling out all of the shows that originally aired on Netflix. Those shows are: Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher. The Netflix shows don’t skimp on violence and language, so this is interesting to see. Disney also announced changes to its parental control features to align with the release of these TV shows.
What Does it Mean for the Future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?
For starters, we could see sequels to some of the shows now that they are on Disney+. Marvel’s two most recent releases, Hawkeye and Spider-Man: No Way Home, both had appearances from characters in the Netflix shows.
Additionally, it shows me that Disney is prepared to allow the MCU to explore some of the darker and more mature storylines and characters. There was a belief that a character like Deadpool (played by Ryan Reynolds) would never fly in the MCU. Now, there seems to be no reason he can’t be a focal character moving forward. I think this is a huge win for Disney/Marvel.
The DCEU hasn’t held a candle to the MCU, but James Gunn‘s The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker showed that DC was able to do something Marvel never could. The dark, raunchy humor Gunn brought to DC could have some competition.
