Bryson DeChambeau Withdraws From 2022 Players Championship Due to Injury

DeChambeau has not played in a PGA Tour event since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open back in January.

It will be another week without the PGA Tour’s most intriguing name. Bryson DeChambeau officially withdrew from the 2022 Players Championship on Sunday evening, marking the second consecutive week he’s missing out on a massive Florida tournament. DeChambeau, the No. 12 player in the world, also withdrew from last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational — where he was set to defend his title — due to wrist and hip injuries.

Last week, DeChambeau posted a lengthy video on Twitter to provide an explanation for withdrawing at Bay Hill. While DeChambeau has yet to upload anything of the sort for the Players Championship, the eight-time PGA Tour winner did share a few words of optimism in a text message to Golfweek.

“Almost ready. Getting ready for something big,” DeChambeau said without much further context. “Many plans in the works.”

Could DeChambeau be referencing the Super Golf League, a controversial Saudi-Arabian rival league that has been the talk of the sport so far in 2022? After all the backlash that Phil Mickelson received from his egregious comments on the SGL, I would presume not. Plus, DeChambeau recently denied being offered $135 million to join the Super Golf League and made a statement backing the PGA Tour.

“As long as the best players in the world are playing the PGA Tour, so will I,” DeChambeau said. “As of now, I am focused on getting myself healthy and competing again soon.”

Now does not seem like a fitting time for DeChambeau to be focused on off-the-course issues.

DeChambeau joins Mickelson and Harris English as the only players ranked inside the world’s top 50 that will not play at TPC Sawgrass this week. Like him or not, Bryson DeChambeau adds tremendous entertainment value to the PGA Tour in each event, which will be greatly missed during the 2022 Players Championship. Get well soon, Brooksy *wink wink*.
