According to his Instagram account, Chicago Cubs reliever Codi Heuer suffered a significant arm injury that required surgery. “Horses don’t stop, they keep going! Can’t wait to be back with the best fans in baseball again,” Heuer wrote with a picture of him laying on a medical bed.

According to Gordon Wittenmeyer of NBC Sports Chicago, a source close to Heuer confirmed he underwent Tommy John surgery. That’s a severe blow for the 25-year-old.

The Cubs acquired Heuer in the trade that sent Craig Kimbrel to the White Sox at the 2021 trade deadline. He notched two saves, a 3.14 ERA, and 17 strikeouts in 25 games with the Cubs last season. The North Side faithful had high hopes for Heuer to take the next step, joining a healthy Rowan Wick at the back end of the bullpen.

Undergoing Tommy John surgery likely spells the end of Codi Heuer’s 2022 season before it even got started. That’s certainly not the news Cubs fans wanted to hear while awaiting lockout or MLB’s resumption announcements.
