Norm Maciver is returning to the Chicago Blackhawks after he was hired as associated general manager, the team announced Wednesday.
Maciver was the director of player personnel for the expansion Seattle Kraken. He’s the first hire for new GM Kyle Davidson, who worked alongside Maciver during the latter’s previous stint in Chicago.
“Bringing in Norm is the first of many hires we plan to make as we restructure our hockey operations,” Davidson said in a release. “It is important in this new hockey operations department to balance strong knowledge in hockey with new and innovative thinking. Norm brings that institutional knowledge and is one of the best talent evaluators in the business – pushing the boundaries on new methods and techniques that we need here at the Blackhawks.
“Norm has been a big help to me throughout my career personally, but he also isn’t afraid to share his opinion and that is something that I respect most about him. He’s a great first step in building this out.”
Maciver will oversee the entire scouting operation and report directly to Davidson.
“Kyle and I have a great relationship, and I believe in his vision for the team and the future of our hockey operations department,” Maciver said. “I’m thankful to the Blackhawks for this opportunity, and I’m anxious to get back to work in a place that has become home.”
Maciver first joined the Blackhawks in 2006, and served as Chicago’s assistant GM for eight seasons. The former NHL defenseman also held roles as Director of Player Personnel and Director of Player Development. He helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013, and 2015.
Maciver’s return comes after assistant GM Ryan Stewart and amateur scouting director Mark Kelley left the Blackhawks last week.
Maciver played 500 NHL games with Rangers, Whalers, Oilers, Senators, Penguins, Jets, and Coyotes from 1986 to 1998.
