For starters, let’s take a second as you read this article to appreciate the fact that baseball is back. That awful lockout lasted too long. Nonetheless, the beautiful sport is back and ready to be played. With the resumption of a season, free agency is open once again.

Prior to the Dec. 1 shutdown, the Chicago Cubs inked pitcher Marcus Stroman to a three-year deal in the final hours before the lockout. Now, after numerous reports before that were once extinguished, the Cubs are again linked to shortstop Carlos Correa.

Jon Morosi and Buster Olney are linking the Cubs and Correa now that the market is open for a second time. Entering the offseason, Cubs fans and analysts alike weren’t sure of the direction the team would take following the massive sell-off at the deadline. However, the signing of Stroman indicates this team is trying to compete now and in the future. Signing Correa doubles down on that ideology.

One major obstacle the Cubs need to navigate is the length of a potential deal with Carlos Correa. There were rumors that the star wants a 10-year deal, but the Cubs are hesitant about giving out such a lengthy contract. In fairness, it’s understandable after the Jason Heyward contract continues to haunt the Cubs’ books. Now, a deal with Correa is something the Cubs will diligently work through before offering big money and a lot of years.

It’s still early in the second free agency period of the offseason. However, Cubs fans can be excited about the fact that the North Siders are favorites to land one of the largest remaining free agents before Opening Day on April 7.
