Cubs Bring Back Reliever Jesse Chavez

The Cubs bolstered their bullpen by bringing back Jesse Chavez, who spent part of the 2018 season in Chicago.

According to a post on his Instagram account, Jesse Chavez is returning to the Chicago Cubs to help bolster the bullpen. Chavez had a ton of success with the North Siders in 2018 after the team traded for him. He pitched 39 innings in relief with a 1.15 ERA, 42 strikeouts, and only five walks.

Since then, he’s had mixed results. From 2019 to 2020, Chavez pitched 66 games with the Rangers and had a 5.21 ERA and 4.99 FIP. However, last season, he turned back the clock (funny whenever you can make a time joke and it’s daylight savings time). In his age-37 season, Chavez pitched in 30 games with a 2.14 ERA, 2.01 FIP, and 1.01 WHIP with the World Series Champion Atlanta Braves.

That’s right, Chavez is a World Series Champion. In the playoffs last season, Chavez tossed 6.1 innings of scoreless baseball. He changed his pitch mix a bit last year, which led to better results than the previous two seasons.

When he was on the Cubs, his fastball always seemed to start below the knees to opposing batters but had so much ride and life at the bottom of the zone that it would freeze batters. That deception led to plenty of called strikes at the knee-high level.

This is a minor move by the Chicago Cubs, but a necessary one after losing Codi Heuer to Tommy John surgery. At 38 years old, Jesse Chavez will provide the Cubs bullpen experience. According to Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network, he wasted no time getting to Spring Training.
