After a busy week of moves that included trading Khalil Mack and releasing Danny Trevathan, Tarik Cohen, and Eddie Goldman, the Chicago Bears have a new outlook. Ryan Poles has freed up $36.9 million in cap space following those moves. That mark is good for the sixth-most salary cap space in the NFL heading into free agency. While Poles has shown decisiveness in roster subtractions, the job is only half done. The new Bears GM now has the challenge of filling the needs of the roster.

The first priority must be building around Justin Fields. Outside of a few pieces, the offensive line will need a revamp. It appears Poles and Eberflus see Fields as the new core of the offense. Protecting Fields will be of the utmost importance if they expect him to have longevity in Chicago. Beyond the offensive line, weapons at the wide receiver position should be another priority. With Allen Robinson likely gone, the Bears will need a new No. 1 target to pair with Darnell Mooney.

On the other side of the ball, the Chicago Bears must find players who can bolster Eberflus’ pass rush. Most importantly, they need a leader to pair with Roquan Smith to elevate the defense. Given all the needs, Ryan Poles will need to use every bit of that $36.9 million in cap space. It also wouldn’t be surprising to see other players on the way out to continue to increase the cap room.
