On Sunday afternoon, Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras spoke with reporters about the possibility of hitting the free-agent market after this season.

With trade rumors circulating since last season and 2022 being the final year of his contract, it’s understandable why Contreras would be asked about his thoughts on an extension and possibly hitting the free-agent market. Either way, it doesn’t seem to bother him as he prepares for the upcoming season.

Since joining the MLB roster in 2016, Contreras has been a key cornerstone for the Cubs and a consistent top-level catcher. In six seasons with the Cubs, he owns a career slash line of .259/.349/.458 with 95 home runs and two All-Star selections.

I, along with many other fans, would love to see Willson Contreras sign a major extension this offseason. But with the way things have gone with ownership as of late, it would not come as a surprise if this was the last year we see him in a Chicago Cubs uniform. We may have a clearer picture once the organization makes its final transactions of the offseason. I’m not sweating any bullets over it…yet.
